More than 330 Lawrence University graduates received their diplomas in a spring Commencement ceremony. Commencement speaker Lee Shallat Chemel, a 1965 alumna who found success as the director of numerous television sitcoms and dramas over the past three decades, challenged the graduates to use their liberal arts education to always push forward and to embrace the chaos of life.

Willa Dworschack, a Lawrence University physics major from Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin, has been named a Goldwater Scholar. The honor went to 496 sophomores or juniors across the country who are studying in areas of math or science.

Fulbright Award
Milou (Emmylou) de Meij, a Lawrence University senior from Bozeman, Montana, received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program Award, the 58th time a Lawrence student has been so honored over the past four decades. She will now spend a year in Latvia teaching English and studying music of the region.

Lawrence's Presto Music Tour With a Mission goes to Houston
Twenty-eight students from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin, spent their spring break on an excursion to Houston that ties in with the school's vision of music with a mission. The students performed, taught in elementary schools and collaborated on music with students in an after-school program that focuses on electronic music. Each spring, Lawrence musicians - students and faculty - go into a chosen metro market for a mix of musical performances and community outreach, an immersion aimed at establishing relationships and community well-being as much as sharing talents and expanding the conservatory's musical footprint. Lawrence University has recognized 732 students for academic achievement by naming them to the 2017-18 dean's list. Students must maintain a minimum 3.4 grade point average for the entire academic year to qualify for dean's list honors.

Lawrence University awards 335 bachelor degrees at its 169th commencement
Lawrence University awarded bachelor of arts and bachelor of music degrees June 10 to 318 graduating seniors, 17 of whom earned both a B.A. and a B.M. degree, at its 169 commencement. Peggy Shepard, the executive director of the New York City-based organization WE ACT For Environmental Justice, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and delivered the principal commencement address.

Lawrence University Junior Elizabeth Bridgwater named Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholar
Lawrence University junior Elizabeth Bridgwater has been named an Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholar. A chemistry and environmental studies major from Fort Collins, Colo., Bridgwater was one of 150 undergraduates nationally selected for the scholarship. Named in honor of long-time former U.S. Senator Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, who was well known for supporting ocean policy and conservation, the scholarship includes a two-year academic scholarship and a summer internship opportunity.

Heidi Arnold of Oswego has been awarded a Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program. Arnold will spend most of her summer living with a host family in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, as part of a Russian language program. Lawrence University senior Tim Carrigg was recently named the winner of the undergraduate jazz arrangement category in DownBeat Magazine's 38th annual Student Music Awards (SMAs) competition.
