Lawrence University senior awarded $30,000 Watson Fellowship for wanderjahr

Jack Canfield was one of 50 national recipients of a $30,000 Watson Fellowship, which supports a wanderjahr of independent travel and exploration. His project will take him to French Polynesia, the Republic of the Congo, Norway and Tuva over the course of 12 months beginning in August.

Lawrence's four-show production of the opera, which was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Walker Evans, explores the idea of the stranger among us. The story is told through the eyes of Laurie Moss, the eldest daughter of a Dust Bowl-era 1930s farming family, who feels unconnected to both her family and community.

Broadcast journalist Charles Gibson, former anchor of ABC's "World News" and long-time co-anchor of "Good Morning, America," was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree as part of the ceremonies.

Senior Elizabeth Perry has been named the recipient of a United States Teaching Assistantship through the Fulbright Commission in Austria. Beginning in October, Perry will begin an eight-month appointment as an English teaching assistant at two secondary schools in Reutte, a small town in the Tirol region of western Austria.
