"On behalf of the full faculty and staff of this university, I tell you that our hearts are bursting with pride," President Laurie A. Carter told the graduates. Rotary Global Grant

Alex Freeman of Kansas City, Missouri, a senior international relations major at Lawrence University, is the recipient of a Rotary Global Grant for graduate study abroad. She will be pursuing her Master's of Science in global media and communications in London in the fall. The Rotary Global Grant is a $30,000 scholarship for graduate-level study abroad awarded by the Rotary Foundation. Freeman was awarded the grant by the Appleton, Wisconsin, club for using media and communications tools to promote peace and conflict resolution.

Lawrence senior curates art exhibition

Sarah Matthews, a Lawrence University art history major from Stoughton, Wisconsin, has curated an art exhibition being shown at the college's Wriston Art Galleries now through May 12, shining a light on textiles made by women in Milwaukee during the Great Depression. The exhibition, "Lost Identities and Loose Threads: The Milwaukee Handicraft Project," is on display in the Hoffmaster Gallery. The work stemmed from the senior's capstone research project.

Lawrence senior pursues internship with NASA

Charles Brailovsky, a Lawrence University psychology major with a longtime fascination with space, has found exciting ways to combine his passions in a NASA internship. He is taking a break from his senior year at Lawrence to work as a virtual environments lab intern at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. His job is to help program and design virtual and augmented reality simulations for NASA projects.

Sela Dombrower, a Lawrence University junior from Boulder, Colorado, used her growing Arabic skills to get the most out of her study abroad experience. Dombrower studied in Amman, Jordan, from August through December. A math and linguistics major, she found it to be a great opportunity to learn colloquial Arabic and gain confidence in communicating.

Watson Fellowship

Lawrence University senior Charlie Wetzel is the latest Lawrentian to be chosen for a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. Wetzel will receive $40,000 to travel to Iceland, India, Thailand, Mexico, The Netherlands, and Germany over the coming year, pursuing a project titled "The Art of the Transgender Life," exploring the intersections between art, gender, national identity, and public policy.

Commissioned music composition

Lucy Croasdale, a senior saxophone student at Lawrence University, was one of the commissioned composers for the recent Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration Weekend, a Lawrence tradition dating back to 1981. The festival invited high school and middle school jazz ensembles to learn from faculty and visiting clinicians in a non-competitive program. Visitors and members of the Lawrence community alike were welcomed to attend performances, which featured visiting artists Samara Joy and Liam Teague, as well as Conservatory students and faculty. Croasdale, of Middleton, was chosen to compose a piece, "Down the Hall (From Us)," that would be performed by participating bands. Choosing one Lawrence student to compose a piece is a long-standing tradition of the Jazz Celebration event.
