Yuan, who graduated in June with majors in English (creative writing) and psychology, is the recipient of the Dave Burrows Award for Senior Experience in Psychology and the Gervais E. and Mary K. Reed Award.

It is awarded annually to an outstanding junior or senior physics major with a strong academic record and great promise for continued work in physics.

Eli Elder, who graduated in June from Lawrence University with a bachelor of musical arts (B.M.A.) degree, is the recipient of the college's Andrew C. Berry-James C. Stewart Prize in Mathematics, awarded to an outstanding graduating senior in mathematics. As a B.M.A. student, he chose mathematics as his cognate. The program offers students a 50-50 split between music studies and their choice of another field in the liberal arts landscape.

Bohao Xu, a student at Lawrence University, is a recipient of the college's Louis C. Baker Memorial Award in Modern Languages.

Lawrence University senior Safiya Grant, a biology major, won LU Launch, an annual business startup competition for Lawrence students. That qualified her for The Pitch, a regional competition for students from five colleges and universities. She finished third, placing in the money. Grant pitched her idea for Muse, an all-natural skin-care line of products.

Lawrence University senior Jonathan Bass is one of four Lawrence students or recent graduates to be named 2024 Fulbright Scholars, a prestigious honor that provides funding to study or teach abroad. Bass is heading to Paris, where he will enroll in the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris to pursue a graduate degree in piano performance.

Lawrence University senior Eli Elder has pursued a Bachelor of Musical Arts (B.M.A.) degree as a means to study both music and mathematics. The B.M.A. was unveiled as a degree option in 2019.

Following graduation in June, Lawrence University biochemistry major Charlie Bunch of Ann Arbor, Michigan, is headed to International Space University in France to pursue a master's program in space science and exploration.

Maddy Tevonian, a senior religious studies and art history double major from Wilmette, Illinois, studied in India and Nepal. She is now preparing a senior capstone analyzing Buddhist art through the lens of religious studies.

Diana Van Gilder, a Lawrence University history major from Moraga, California, is heading to France this summer to present a paper at a conference that explores links between tourism and fiction.

Joseph Carpenter, a Lawrence University junior studying mathematics and physics, is the recipient of a Goldwater Scholarship. He is the third Lawrentian to earn that honor in the past five years.

Two Lawrence University students, Sydney Closson and Kat McClain, are working with geosciences professor Jeff Clark in building 10 handheld spectrometers for use in research and hands-on instruction. The work is funded by a $10,000 grant from the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium.

Lawrence University sophomore David Smith sought a college path that would allow him to study math and physics at a high level while remaining immersed in music. He found just that at Lawrence. His talents on the cello have earned him honors as co-winner of a Concerto Competition with the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra.

During the 2020-21 academic year, women's hockey started as Lawrence University's 22nd varsity athletics program. Four years later, nine seniors who were present since the beginning are preparing to graduate. Those seniors will play their final game as Vikings on Feb. 10 at the Champion Center in Appleton. They were recently honored at the program's first ever Senior Day.

Eitan Price was keeping good company last summer. The Lawrence University sophomore linguistics major from Carmel, Indiana, attended the Linguistics Society of America's (LSA) Summer Institute, a program mostly attended by graduate students. It is described as an "intellectual summer camp" by its organizers, made to forward the study of linguistics by gathering the foremost professionals and students in linguistics studies. Midway through his sophomore year at Lawrence, Price is now building on what he learned at the Summer Institute.

Five Lawrence University piano students were honored in the Young Artist Performance Piano division in a statewide competition of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). The annual competition was held Oct. 14 at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Owen Brady, a Lawrence University senior from Barrington, Rhode Island, had his commissioned music, "Bear in Mind," performed during the recent Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration Weekend at Lawrence. Brady was handpicked for the annual student commission by Patty Darling, a Lawrence instructor of music and one of the organizers of the annual jazz festival. The piece was performed by high school bands taking part in the festival.
