Diana Van Gilder, a Lawrence University history major from Moraga, California, is heading to France this summer to present a paper at a conference that explores links between tourism and fiction.

Joseph Carpenter, a Lawrence University junior studying mathematics and physics, is the recipient of a Goldwater Scholarship. He is the third Lawrentian to earn that honor in the past five years.

Two Lawrence University students, Sydney Closson and Kat McClain, are working with geosciences professor Jeff Clark in building 10 handheld spectrometers for use in research and hands-on instruction. The work is funded by a $10,000 grant from the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium.

Lawrence University junior Annika Schmidt excels in her academic pursuits: cello and linguistics. She was recently named the co-winner of the annual Concerto Competition for the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra.

Lawrence University sophomore David Smith sought a college path that would allow him to study math and physics at a high level while remaining immersed in music. He found just that at Lawrence. His talents on the cello have earned him honors as co-winner of a Concerto Competition with the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra.

During the 2020-21 academic year, women's hockey started as Lawrence University's 22nd varsity athletics program. Four years later, nine seniors who were present since the beginning are preparing to graduate. Those seniors will play their final game as Vikings on Feb. 10 at the Champion Center in Appleton. They were recently honored at the program's first ever Senior Day.

Owen Brady, a Lawrence University senior from Barrington, Rhode Island, had his commissioned music, "Bear in Mind," performed during the recent Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration Weekend at Lawrence. Brady was handpicked for the annual student commission by Patty Darling, a Lawrence instructor of music and one of the organizers of the annual jazz festival. The piece was performed by high school bands taking part in the festival.

Five Lawrence University piano students were honored in the Young Artist Performance Piano division in a statewide competition of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). The annual competition was held Oct. 14 at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Eitan Price was keeping good company last summer. The Lawrence University sophomore linguistics major from Carmel, Indiana, attended the Linguistics Society of America's (LSA) Summer Institute, a program mostly attended by graduate students. It is described as an "intellectual summer camp" by its organizers, made to forward the study of linguistics by gathering the foremost professionals and students in linguistics studies. Midway through his sophomore year at Lawrence, Price is now building on what he learned at the Summer Institute.

Jonathan Bass, a Lawrence University fifth-year senior, was named the winner in the Young Artist Performance Piano division in a statewide competition of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). By winning the state competition, Bass moves on to represent Wisconsin at the division level, with a chance to compete nationally at the annual MTNA Conference in March 2024.

Lawrence University has announced its 2022-23 Dean's List, an annual honor roll of students demonstrating exemplary academic performance. The list is compiled at the end of the academic year once all grades have been recorded.

Four Lawrence University students were awarded a Henry Merritt Wriston Scholarship. The award was first established in 1975 to honor the eighth president of Lawrence. It is given to those students whose "academic excellence is reflected by their wide-ranging interests, balanced personalities, and the multiple abilities one associates with a truly educated person." The 2023 recipients include Sydney Closson, Shira Hanovich, Colin Hutton, and Taylor Svoboda.

Isabel Dorn is the recipient of the Charlotte Wood Prize in English at Lawrence University, awarded to the student with the best essay entered in an annual competition.

Lydia Jensen is a recipient of the Alexander Wiley Prize at Lawrence University, awarded to an undergraduate who has, in his or her college years, most demonstrated a principled independence of thought, moral courage, and creative commitment to a significant cause.

Leila Raymond is a recipient of the Alexander Wiley Prize at Lawrence University, awarded to an undergraduate who has, in his or her college years, most demonstrated a principled independence of thought, moral courage, and creative commitment to a significant cause.

Madeleine Tevonian is the recipient of Lawrence University's Graham Waring Prize in Religious Studies, awarded to a student for the best paper written in a religious studies course.

Kim Du is the recipient of the Jean Wiley Thickens Prize at Lawrence University, awarded annually to a student who, by interest, scholarship, and aptitude, shows the most promise for teaching at the high school level.

Helen Panshin is the recipient of Lawrence University's Tichenor Prize in English, awarded annually to the student with the best critical essay about a work of English literature.

Maggie Walker is the recipient of the Jean Wiley Thickens Prize at Lawrence University, awarded annually to a student who, by interest, scholarship, and aptitude, shows the most promise for teaching at the high school level.

Jackalyn Wyrobek is the recipient of Lawrence University's Tank-Palmquist-Ross Award in Geology, awarded annually to the outstanding geology student in the junior class.

Malcolm Davis Jr. is the recipient of the 2023 Student Life Award at Lawrence University, given to a senior in recognition of leadership and service.

Samantha Tolu is the recipient of the Senior Prize for Statistics and Data Science at Lawrence University, awarded annually to a graduating senior who demonstrates interest and excellence in the study of statistics and data science.

Grace Krueger is the recipient of the Estelle Reid Prize in Library Science, awarded to a student planning to pursue the graduate study of library science.

Isabel Dorn is the recipient of the Warren Hurst Stevens Prize at Lawrence University, awarded annually to a junior in recognition of high scholarship and activity in college affairs.

Ethan Harnisch is the recipient of Lawrence University's Senior Art Award in Studio Art. It is awarded annually to students excelling in studio art.

Madeline Taylor is the recipient of the Louis Henry Schutte Memorial Prize in English at Lawrence University, awarded to the senior English major with the highest grade point average for all courses completed in the six terms immediately preceding his or her final term at Lawrence.

Isabel Jo Osterhus is the recipient of the Patricia Ritter Prize in Chinese Culture at Lawrence University, recognizing exceptional achievement by a Lawrence undergraduate in the study of Chinese culture.

Charlie Wetzel is the recipient of the Elizabeth Richardson Award in Studio Art at Lawrence University, awarded annually to women excelling in studio art.
