Eli Elder receives award in mathematics

Eli Elder, who graduated in June from Lawrence University with a bachelor of musical arts (B.M.A.) degree, is the recipient of the college's Andrew C. Berry-James C. Stewart Prize in Mathematics, awarded to an outstanding graduating senior in mathematics. As a B.M.A. student, he chose mathematics as his cognate. The program offers students a 50-50 split between music studies and their choice of another field in the liberal arts landscape.

Lawrence University senior Safiya Grant, a biology major, won LU Launch, an annual business startup competition for Lawrence students. That qualified her for The Pitch, a regional competition for students from five colleges and universities. She finished third, placing in the money. Grant pitched her idea for Muse, an all-natural skin-care line of products.

Lawrence University sophomore David Smith sought a college path that would allow him to study math and physics at a high level while remaining immersed in music. He found just that at Lawrence. Celebrating inaugural women's hockey team at Lawrence

During the 2020-21 academic year, women's hockey started as Lawrence University's 22nd varsity athletics program. Four years later, nine seniors who were present since the beginning are preparing to graduate. Those seniors will play their final game as Vikings on Feb. 10 at the Champion Center in Appleton. They were recently honored at the program's first ever Senior Day.

Eitan Price attends Linguistics Society of America's (LSA) Summer Institute

Eitan Price was keeping good company last summer. The Lawrence University sophomore linguistics major from Carmel, Indiana, attended the Linguistics Society of America's (LSA) Summer Institute, a program mostly attended by graduate students. It is described as an "intellectual summer camp" by its organizers, made to forward the study of linguistics by gathering the foremost professionals and students in linguistics studies. Midway through his sophomore year at Lawrence, Price is now building on what he learned at the Summer Institute.

Student music commission for Jazz Weekend

Owen Brady, a Lawrence University senior from Barrington, Rhode Island, had his commissioned music, "Bear in Mind," performed during the recent Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration Weekend at Lawrence. Brady was handpicked for the annual student commission by Patty Darling, a Lawrence instructor of music and one of the organizers of the annual jazz festival. The piece was performed by high school bands taking part in the festival.

Five Lawrence University piano students were honored in the Young Artist Performance Piano division in a statewide competition of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). The annual competition was held Oct. 14 at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Wisconsin piano competition honors

Jonathan Bass, a Lawrence University fifth-year senior, was named the winner in the Young Artist Performance Piano division in a statewide competition of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). By winning the state competition, Bass moves on to represent Wisconsin at the division level, with a chance to compete nationally at the annual MTNA Conference in March 2024.

Henry Merritt Wriston Scholarships awarded at Lawrence

Four Lawrence University students were awarded a Henry Merritt Wriston Scholarship. The award was first established in 1975 to honor the eighth president of Lawrence. It is given to those students whose "academic excellence is reflected by their wide-ranging interests, balanced personalities, and the multiple abilities one associates with a truly educated person." The 2023 recipients include Sydney Closson, Shira Hanovich, Colin Hutton, and Taylor Svoboda.
