Geosciences students build research tools
Two Lawrence University students, Sydney Closson and Kat McClain, are working with geosciences professor Jeff Clark in building 10 handheld spectrometers for use in research and hands-on instruction. The work is funded by a $10,000 grant from the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium.

Annika Schmidt named co-winner of Concerto Competition
Lawrence University junior Annika Schmidt excels in her academic pursuits: cello and linguistics. She was recently named the co-winner of the annual Concerto Competition for the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra.
Celebrating inaugural women's hockey team at Lawrence
During the 2020-21 academic year, women's hockey started as Lawrence University's 22nd varsity athletics program. Four years later, nine seniors who were present since the beginning are preparing to graduate. Those seniors will play their final game as Vikings on Feb. 10 at the Champion Center in Appleton. They were recently honored at the program's first ever Senior Day.

Eitan Price attends Linguistics Society of America's (LSA) Summer Institute
Eitan Price was keeping good company last summer. The Lawrence University sophomore linguistics major from Carmel, Indiana, attended the Linguistics Society of America's (LSA) Summer Institute, a program mostly attended by graduate students. It is described as an "intellectual summer camp" by its organizers, made to forward the study of linguistics by gathering the foremost professionals and students in linguistics studies. Midway through his sophomore year at Lawrence, Price is now building on what he learned at the Summer Institute.

Henry Merritt Wriston Scholarships awarded at Lawrence
Four Lawrence University students were awarded a Henry Merritt Wriston Scholarship. The award was first established in 1975 to honor the eighth president of Lawrence. It is given to those students whose "academic excellence is reflected by their wide-ranging interests, balanced personalities, and the multiple abilities one associates with a truly educated person." The 2023 recipients include Sydney Closson, Shira Hanovich, Colin Hutton, and Taylor Svoboda.

Lawrence University held its 2023 Commencement ceremony on June 11, celebrating 310 graduates. "On behalf of the full faculty and staff of this university, I tell you that our hearts are bursting with pride," President Laurie A. Carter told the graduates. Lawrence senior pursues internship with NASA
Charles Brailovsky, a Lawrence University psychology major with a longtime fascination with space, has found exciting ways to combine his passions in a NASA internship. He is taking a break from his senior year at Lawrence to work as a virtual environments lab intern at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. His job is to help program and design virtual and augmented reality simulations for NASA projects.

Emily Dorr, a music education major at Lawrence University, has been committed to building community among others at Lawrence who are aspiring to teach music. As president of Lawrence's chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the senior from St. Paul, Minnesota, led a recent annual symposium that featured an international guest.

Study in Jordan
Sela Dombrower, a Lawrence University junior from Boulder, Colorado, used her growing Arabic skills to get the most out of her study abroad experience. Dombrower studied in Amman, Jordan, from August through December. A math and linguistics major, she found it to be a great opportunity to learn colloquial Arabic and gain confidence in communicating.

Entenza-Sierra of Lawrence wins pitch contest
Maria (Marife) Entenza Sierra, a senior at Lawrence University, won a pitch contest for her Chandler Senior Experience art project at the recent Self-Employment in the Arts (SEA) conference. The global studies and studio art double major from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, was one of four student winners in the contest held in Chicago during Fall Term.
